Be kind to your beloved companion animals as well as the countless animals that are homeless, neglected, abused or exploited and need your help. Remember Your Animals in Your Will To protect your companion animals, you must secure an agreement with a friend who is willing to serve as a “guardian.”  Be sure to designate funds for food, shelter, veterinary and general care in your will. It is also a lovely gesture to reward the guardian(s) with a financial gift. This can be done at the end of each calendar year as a “thank you” for caring for your animals. Do not give the gift at the onset of the guardianship.

Instead, give the gift as an incentive to motivate the guardian to carry out their duties each year for the duration of the animals’ lives or after successful adoptions have taken place. It’s best to consult with a lawyer familiar with estate planning regarding the specifics of your will.
